SHANDONG-BASED SITC Container Lines recently launched a new direct container service from the Chinese port of Qinhuangdao in Hebei province to Japan.
This has effectively become the port city's second international ocean liner service after the route from Qinhuangdao to Incheon in South Korea was launched, says Xinhua News Agency.
It said that three 800-TEU containerships are deployed on the new weekly service that departs from Qinhuangdao every Wednesday to make calls at Tianjin, Yantai, Tokyo, Yokohama and Nagoya.
This development comes as Hebei province's trade with Japan undergoes rapid growth in recent years. In the past, however, Hebei's cargo was generally shipped via the neighbouring municipality of Tianjin owing to a lack of direct shipping routes. This is estimated to have added up to CNY2,000 (US$256) per TEU in additional transport costs.
