The liner carrier Hapag-Lloyd held a naming ceremony Friday for its largest ever vessel, the 13,200-TEU Hamburg Express, the first of a series of 10 vessels ordered in December 2010 to be deployed on the Asia-Europe trade.
The vessel will go into the G6 Alliance-operated Loop 4. The service is currently operated with 10 vessels with an average capacity of 11,740 TEUs. The new Hapag-Lloyd ship is the largest deployed on the service, with APL and Hyundai Merchant Marine providing the other ships.
The Hamburg Express is, by far, the biggest vessel ever operated by the German container line. Previously, the largest ships among its fleet of 147 vessels were its series of 8,750-TEU ships.
