1/31/2013 10:03:04 AM

Cargo traffic at South Korea's seaports hit a record high last year on the back of growth in shipments of machinery, automobiles and oil-related products, a government report showed.

The volume of cargo handled at the seaports reached an all-time high of 1.33 billion tonnes last year, up 1.6 percent from 1.31 billion tonns a year earlier, according to the report by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, said Xinhua.

Of the total, cargo handling of machinery surged 16.9 percent, while those of automobiles and oil-related products rose five percent and 2.3 percent respectively.

Container cargo processed at local seaports also rose 4.1 percent year-on-year to 22.49 million TEUs last year, surpassing the 20 million TEU mark for the second consecutive year, according to the report.

The country's largest port in Busan, 450 km, south of Seoul, processed 17.02 million TEUs, up 5.2 percent.
