YANG MING Marine Transport Corp has taken delivery of the last of four 8,204-TEU containerships built by the South Korean shipbuilders, Hyundai.
The environmentally-friendly Ultimate is docked at the Port of Kaohsiung and is expected to join sister vessels on the trade between Asia and Europe.
Yang Ming took delivery of the first container ship in the series in 2005 after placing an order with Hyundai in 2003, according to a report from the Taipei Times, which said each ship cost US$2.43 million.
The ships are the size of three and a half football pitches are too big to pass through the Panama Canal on transpacific routes or to the US, and for this reason, they will focus on Europe.
The Ultimate is equipped with an alternative marine power system to enable the ship to switch to onshore power supplies when at harbour, lowering the amount of air pollutants released.
Yang Ming's ship buying spree is expected to continue as the company is planning to place an order for five more 8,200-TEU container ships from China Shipbuilding Corp.
