Logistics real estate developer Garbe, based in Hamburg (Germany), is investing EUR 30 million in the construction of a modern airfreight centre at Leipzig/Halle airport (Germany).
The World Cargo Centre in the airport’s “Frachtbereich Süd” covers 20,000 sqm of warehouse space, 3,400 sqm of office space and 38 gates. The first phase will be inaugurated at the end of June, and the second phase in November. Total capacity will then amount to 200,000 t annually. 50 new jobs will be created by the centre. Freight volumes at the airport rose to 12,290 t in Q1/2007, a threefold increase over the like-for-like period last year, when 4,575 t were handled. Growth was due mainly to the arrival of DHL, but also owed something to the airport’s two new intercontinental full-freighter services.
