RZD, Primorye Territory Administration and Chinese officials have discussed the possibility of starting a regular train service between Vladivostok and Suifenkhe in China, with a possible extension onto Harbin.
Michael Zaichenko, the director of the Far East Railway, believes that railway communication in the Far East plays a leading role in international cooperation, including cargo transport, the development of mineral deposits, cultural communications and tourism.
For example, the Far East Railway International Communication Service says that 80 percent of wood – more than 5.5 million tonnes in 2008 – is transported by railway, and only 20 percent by sea, and at Vladivostok, 99.1 percent of wood is transported by rail.
