Hong Kong Air Freight Down 6.1 Percent

8/16/2011 10:18:37 AM

Hong Kong International Airport‘s cargo handled fell 6.1 percent in July, marking the five consecutive month of decreased year-over-year freight handling.

Throughput at HKIA last month totalled 341,000 tonnes, as imports dropped 9 percent and exports contracted 8 percent. Over the first seven months of the year cargo volumes at HKIA compared to the same period of 2010 fell 2.9 percent to 2.3 million tonnes, despite plane movements rising 11.5 percent to 191,375 flights.

The downturn at Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited, the leading cargo handler at HKIA, has been even more severe. The company saw its volumes contract 7.7 percent in July to 237,739 tonnes, and for the year through July its tonnage was 5.1 percent lower than a year ago.

A Hactl spokesperson said the declines were a reflection of the rapid growth enjoyed in 2010, not of a trading slowdown this year or of a loss of market share to rival terminal operators.
