Hapag and Hanjin boost Med-Montreal capacity

4/4/2012 10:17:58 AM

The ocean carriers Hapag-Lloyd and Hanjin Shipping will raise capacity on their weekly Mediterranean-to-Montreal gateway MCA loop by increasing the size of two vessels, according to research from ComPair Data.

Although the carriers will only change two of the five vessels on the MCA, average ship capacity will increase nearly 17 percent, from 2,057 TEUs to 2,404 TEUs. The port rotation of the MCA remains Valencia, Cagliari, Salerno, Leghorn, Genoa, Marseilles, Algeciras, Lisbon, Montreal, Algeciras, and Valencia.

Hapag-Lloyd also operates two similar, albeit much larger, joint services with Grand Alliance partner OOCL and Mediterranean Shipping Co., its SL1 and SL2 loops, which connect Montreal weekly with the North Europe ports of Antwerp, Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Le Havre, and Liverpool. Neither Hapag-Lloyd nor Hanjin currently have any other offerings that connect directly with Montreal.
