Cargo Volume Falls at Hong Kong International Airport

5/23/2012 10:23:16 AM

Cargo throughput at the world’s largest freight airport fell 12.5 percent last month compared to March.

Volume through Hong Kong International Airport declined 0.8 percent year-over-year in April to 327,000 metric tons, and was 12.5 percent lower than the 368,000 metric tons handled in March of this year.

The decline in cargo volume was primarily due to a 5 percent year-over-year drop in imports together with a 3 percent decrease in transshipments, with exports increasing 2 percent compared to a year earlier. Intra-Asia routes to and from South East Asia outperformed other key regions, said HKIA in a statement.

In the first four months of the year, a total of 1.3 million metric tons of cargo was handled at HKIA, down 1.3 percent from the same period last year.

On a rolling 12-month basis through April, cargo handled at HKIA dropped 5.4 percent to 3.9 million metric tons compared to a year earlier.
