A DRAFT proposal from the European Commission to reduce carbon emissions from flights using EU airports by 2012 may be extended to 2013 for foreign airlines, allegedly to appease US airlines and ward off legal action.
But intra-European flights, a report in The Financial Times said, would be required to toe the line by 2011 as the civil aviation sector is regarded as the fastest-growing polluter of carbon dioxide, said to contribute to global warming.
Under the draft proposal, airlines will be entitled to buy pollution allowances "from other sectors in the [EU] community scheme for use to cover their emissions", said a report by EUobserver, a Belgium-based internet news portal.
