VIETNAM International Container Terminals (VICT) is creating extra space to berth more vessels simultaneously at its Ho Chi Minh City facilities to capture a bigger chunk of this growing container market, following the nation's entry into the World Trade Organisation.
The plan calls for VICT to extend its berth length by 192 metres to a total of 678 metres at a cost of US$15 million to the operator, in a bid to enable up to four containerships to berth at the same time, a report by the Thanh Nien News said.
The operator also intends to raise the number of gantry cranes, reach stackers and refrigerated container connections at the terminal. It also plans to increase capacity to 900,000 TEU annually by 2008.
"This new expansion will enable the port to enter a new phase in its development as Vietnam's premier container port," said VICT chairman Truong Quoc Hung.
