Ningbo Port Container Traffic Up 13.7 Percent

8/8/2011 9:51:30 AM

China’s Ningbo Port saw container traffic increase 13.7 percent year-over-year to a new record of 7 million 20-foot equivalent units in the first six months of the year.

Total tonnage also soared to a new high of 208.3 million tons, up 7.5 percent compared to a year earlier.

The port said its container traffic growth was 3.5 percentage points higher than the average growth of China’s ports over the same period. The success was attributed to the aggressive development of its hinterland market, particularly North Zhejiang and South Jiangsu provinces.

Domestic container movements also increased in the first half, up 21.7 percent to 641,000 TEUs, while containers movements by rail rose 182.3 percent to 25,500 TEUs.

“The average monthly sailings in the first half year is 1236, an increase of 14.2 percent from the same period of last year,” the port said.
